Summary

The goal of the seminar is to provide both new and experienced long term care infection preventionists with the knowledge, basic tools and hands-on activities they will need to hit the ground running with their infection prevention and control programs.

This training will be led by a team of experienced infection preventionists from Hektoen Institute of Medicine and the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Topics covered will include: the history of infection preventionists in health care, competency requirements for infection preventionists, assessments, risks, infection prevention and control program infrastructure, regulatory requirements, the core principles of infection prevention, hand hygiene, standard precautions and transmission-based precautions, surveillance, enhanced barrier precautions, legal aspects of infection prevention in long term care, outbreak investigation, environment of care, employee health and more. 

At the end of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the history of infection prevention and control programs and their importance in LTC facilities.
  • Describe the core principles of Infection Prevention and Control, and the leadership role/responsibilities of the Infection Preventionist in managing an interdisciplinary program.
  • Define standard and transmission-based precautions.
  • Develop interdisciplinary policies and procedures for cleaning and disinfecting.
  • Identify the necessary programs, tools and team members required to fulfill employee health requirements.
