ENSURING COMPLIANCE WITH MANDATORY MEDICARE DOCUMENTATION AUDITS

OVERVIEW

Every Medicare certified facility in the US is now subject to a mandatory 5 record review by their Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC). Audit focus can vary from meeting the skilled requirements of therapy, to timely and accurate Medicare certifications with a large emphasis on verifying HIPPS codes generated by PPS MDS.

OBJECTIVES: 

• Understand the basic concept of MDS data elements as they apply to reimbursement and understand which elements of the medical record are including in audits.
• Review basic Medicare compliance topics including skilled requirements for rehab and nursing, physician certifications, and daily skilled documentation requirements.
• Discuss types of Medicare audits with an emphasis on the 5 record review that all Medicare providers are subject to.
