IDPH Offering Certified Nursing Assistant Apprenticeship Program
The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) informed LeadingAge Illinois in a recent meeting of their new Certified Nursing Assistant Apprenticeship Program. Facilities need to partner with a local college-based CNA training program that is within reasonable distance to the facility. Either the college or the facility (or both as a team) have to recruit 8 students. These must be employees of the facility at the time of enrollment in the training program. If the facility is already serving as a clinical site for a college, this would be the most likely partnership.
The pilot program will be across the state with one apprenticeship program in each of the seven CMS regions except that the Chicago area will have two and southern Illinois will have three. IDPH will pay the student’s tuition up to $1,800 and their salary for 120 days in the facility after or just before certification. We will pay the student to work as a Resident Attendant for up to 30 days if that will fit with their school schedule.
The goal is to have this moving by July 1. IDPH will probably hold a couple of WebEx sessions to get everyone on board, explain the training, and provide assistance in initiating it.
