Don’t Fall for It: Tips for Trips

OVERVIEW

This course provides an in-depth overview of fall risks in older adults, emphasizing the serious physical, functional, and quality of life consequences of falls. It outlines a comprehensive, proactive falls management program that includes assessment, prevention strategies, staff training, environmental safety, and data analysis. The presentation highlights how falls are multifactorial – stemming from intrinsic, extrinsic, cognitive, medical, and situational factors – and stresses the importance of individualized interventions. It also details the importance of root cause analysis, such as the “5 Whys”, to address recurrent fall events. Finally, it reinforces that effective fall prevention requires an interdisciplinary team approach, consistent monitoring, and use of established tools and evidence-based resources.
